Buttermilk Falls
Roll Holes

Water can be pretty turbulent in streams, especially under waterfalls, and especially in times of high water. Stones and rocks can be caught and whirled round and round without ever getting free till they're ground to small pebbles and swept away.

Over time – centuries, millenia – this whirling round and round gouges out actual holes in the rock of the stream bed and often the holes are perfectly round. But not always, of course, especially under waterfalls, where the holes tend to be more irregular in shape. At least in Buttermilk Falls Gorge.

There's probably a scientific names for these gouged-out holes, but I know them as "roll holes", because they're formed by rocks rolling round and round in the creek bed.
