Cascadilla Gorge
Steps

The walls of Cascadilla Gorge are made of crumbly shale and other soft rock. Debris is sometimes found along the gorge trail. Water seeping into cracks in the rock freezes during the winter and expands, often resulting in rock slides - which is why the trail is closed in winter. The last photo shows winter damage to the steps before it has been repaired.

The debris-strewn steps shown here are located in the middle of the upper S-curves.
